I happened upon this article this morning. It comes from no one other than the (in)famous Jon Lech Johansen. I have to admit that when I first scanned it on bloglines I thought he was criticizing MS for putting out FUD on the Zune. Then I realized he was pointing out how others are (unfairly) criticizing us. Way to go Jon!

Andy Ihnatko's article was shameless. I think the Sun Times should start drug testing their writers. A low point even for the Sun Times.
The WSJ did a story too. That referenced a poor rating on the Amazon Sales Chart. Obviously no one bothered to check product prices. The iPods and other non-Zune players are discounted, but not the Zune. If you wanted to buy a Zune online, Amazon was not the place.
So far the ExtremeTech review is the most accurate and unbiased.
Agreed. I definitely think this anti-Zune "fad" misses the point. You guys did some great work changing the conversation. Kudos.
I think the person with the most important comments so far has been Balmer himself. On Bloomberg.com, he talked about the Zune team and MS "keeping up." I think that's the biggest deal. A Microsoft 1.0 product is always pretty predictable, short on features, high on potential. Not to mention, David over at zunester keeps mentioning being nimble as one of their goals. I hope they believe what they're saying because Apple has two extremely disruptive products in the pipeline... the iphone and touchscreen ipod will take the industry by storm when they're released no matter how flawed they are. Microsoft has to be careful that the product/firmware updates are frequent and that new product releases are timely. You just have to make a splash every now and then or you won't be in the conversation too long (ask Apple). If the updates are on a cycle anything like the 360 or Windows, then it was fun while it lasted...

zune needs to update to the point where MS knows for sure that apple wont be able to compete with MS. it took apple 5 years to do the same S#^t but the only new thing they brought was... color and..oh videos.
updates are strongly needed to this device, and need to be updated every month.
I agree with the comments, however I am not sure how much of an impact will the iPhone or touch screen iPod will have on Zune. It will have some, but not much. Both will be priced higher than 80GB iPod and are totally seperate product category. However MS will have to keep coming up with features and new ideas. The race is on....
You guys really should hire jazz pianist Reuven Avram. His video is truly excellent. It's far more convincing than any advertising campaign. And that's what Armand Hammer always maintained: an inch of editorial is worth a page of paid advertising.

The sun times is complete garabage. On another note, I'm glad the zune is getting mixed reviews that range from extremely negative to above average. You may ask why....for one, it'll highlight the flaws in the player very quickly so the Zune team can begin to work out the kinks. I'm surprised not one review that I've read mentioned the skipping that I'm experiencing. I like how Derek at inside home recording called out J Allard on his podcast for the lack of portable hard drive features, limited wi-fi, and no wireless syncing. That was classic. J says it was due to a lack of time. I wonder if those things were even in the pipeline. Hopefully, more embarrassing scenarios like this will make updating the firmware quickly and frequently a bigger priority.
