I did this before and it was pretty well trafficked. If you guys have any questions about Zune, the current features, the history, troubles you are having, etc, feel free to ask them here. There is one caveat, though. I won't comment about future product/features. Other than that, feel free to ask.

When is it available in canada ?
to update all the album art, do i have to delete all my songs and resync them, resync while my songs are still on my zune, or will it update automatically.
i tried just adding all my files to the sync list and syncing, but i dont see any difference in album art.
David - we've not officially announced a date for Canada, but it is high on the list.
Jake - I don't know if this is the "official" advice, but I just formated the device and then re-synched.

Why does much of the music from Zune Marketplace only use 150 x 150 resolution artwork? (It's embedded in the actual .WMA files.) It's too low resolution for the Zune and really gives the user a bad impression. 150 x 150 stetched to 240 x 240 looks poor. Is there anyway to get the Zune Marketplace to send higher resolution?
It's strange. Your Zune CD rips get 200 x 200 downloaded (like WMP 11), Zune Marketplace is 150 x 150... and the Zune portable uses 240 x 240 natively. (The "pre-loaded" music that came with the Zune used 200 x 200, too.)
For Zune Marketplace content, I end up having to manually remove the 150 x 150 embedded artwork. I then replace it manually... or use the "Find Album Info" feature to get the 200 x 200 art, which looks far better scaled to 240 x 240. This is tedious and not a good user experience.
Can the Zune portable external video output 640 x 480 resolution (like iPod), or is it hardware limited to the Zune's screen resolution of 320 x 240?
ron - regarding the art work, the 150 x 150 pixel art wotrk is legacy from the time the deals were originally struck. I don't know (but I assume) that will be updated over time by the company that ingests for us. Regarding the video output, it can do higher resolutions, but the device currently only supports 320 x 240 files.

While I haven't gotten a Zune yet (poor college student!), one thing I heard was that if a picture is horizontal, it still displays the picture on it's side, thus not fully utilizing the screen.
Would it be possible that if you have a vertical picture that it could be "right side up" (like when playing music) so that it uses all of the screen space?
Also, in firmware updates will we mostly see bugfixes, or also additions to the software (such as podcast support)?
Also, I'm curious if Zune is an entire new product line, or if it is just the name of this one product?

Do you know if Microsoft or any other manufacturer will be producing a car power adapter that includes an audio line-out, so I can only have one cable running from the Zune?

What happened to the cool DJ feature that was documented in an early draft of the user manual? (Personally, I think that would have been far more cool or "social".) Legal or licensing issues? (I realize you may not be able to comment on this, since it could be a future feature... but hey, it was documented in a public document.)
"Zune allows you to stream music to up to 4 other Zune devices. If you wish to 'DJ' content to other devices you need to go either to settings/music or press the center button in the 'now playing' screen. You will be presented with a DJ setting with 3 options: off, on, or friends. If you choose DJ:on, anyone can listen in to the same music that you are currently listing to. If you choose DJ: friends, only people in your friends list can listen in."

While trying to fix some problems with my desktop, I needed to reinstall it. Installed the Zune software again and of course the player refused to synchronize, displaying the annoying “Relocating?” screen.
To reestablish the sync I needed to choose the second option and now all my preloaded content is gone. How can I recover from this situation caused by the Buggy “Relocating?” screen?
Where can I download this content from, since mine is gone?
Shouldn't Microsoft provide these files to Zune Owners? What's the problem in providing the already provided content to the owners? Could you please forward these words to zune support team.

i know their is the zune car kit, but is there any chance of an integrated solution that hooks directly from the zune's dock port to the car's head unit

i have a fairly high-end car stereo (with that very deck), i could use a generic input (kenwood offers CA-C1AX) but the ipod input also allows you to control the ipod from the unit
1)Do you have any idea when the accessories situation will get more diverse. I can still walk into certain best buy stores and not find one single zune item besides the player. Same thing with fry's...
2)Any idea on why eliminating the skipping and random shutting off problems for the zune player has been so difficult for the zune team. This has been a day 1 problem for most of us, yet we still deal with it daily. After the update didn't fix it, I'm starting to get worried. Maybe its just faulty hardware? And, you might not want to throw a party with your zune as the music source...the dancing might get really messy on thoses skipping sections.
How come the Zune software isn't compatible with MSN Messenger's "Now Playing" personalized status messages?
It seems pretty ironic that Messenger's more compatible with iTunes than Zune
Few things:
1) The installation failed on me cause I lost the internet connection for a moment while it was downloading the update, the error message that I got was not at all helpful (it said close all programs and restart), the good thing was once I got my connection back and restarted the install it didn't start downloading all over again.
1.1) I use a LUA on my XP and had to install the Zune using the admin a/c (quite obvious), the problem was once the install was complete and I logged back in using the LUA and connected my Zune, it told me I can only use it under guest mode or reformat the Zune and start all over again, had to reformat and in the process lost all the preloaded content!
2) The device completely switches off the backlight after 1 minute (or whatever you've set on the device), ideally it should just dim the backlight ala ipod.
3) Zune software gave me nightmares in trying to sync. I keep all the music on my iRiver and a subset of it on my computer (I only have a dual partitioned 40 gig HD). Before the sync, I changed the setting on the s/w to ignore my hard-disk folders but it kept on adding them to the library! I still haven't found a way about how to deal with it.
4) I somehow didn't like the Zune s/w, it's a crippled rip-off of WMP 11; for instance there is no browse library by the folder in Zune ala WMP 11.
More to follow as I play around with it.

I have Media Center 2002 (I just got the laptop 2 months ago, so no idea why it's the old version!). What do i do to use my Zune? I love the thing, but my only other machines are at work, and you can't install the Zune software there. Any suggestions?
I was wondering if the zune will ever be accessable from windows explorer(without hack), and if so Could file transfer and file structure take place.

My question relates to music videos. The zune software allows you to create playlists for your videos, which would work fantastic for those of us who collect and prefer to listen/watch music videos rather than just music. Unfortunately, when I synced the video playlist with my zune, it seems only the videos were transferred without the playlist. I had the idea of converting all of my tv series I have on DVD (I have about 30+) to a format compatible with my zune, but without video playlist support this is pointless.
So my question is whether the fact that the zune software allows you to create playlists for video means it was intended for the zune to play video in lists and is it intended to be fixed so the playlist gets transferred along with the videos?
Brian - we played around with teh picture orientation. Since the vast majority of photos are horizontal, we decided to make the default horizontal.
Regarding updates, I think you will see a mix of both bug fixes and feature additions
ron - there is a company that does it today. it is called IME. Very nice interface into the car's headunit. As for others, there are a few. You might see some at CES.
ron - re the hardware 2.0 question, I'm not really sure. I'd guess that it referred to the pre-production hardware. When I look on the about screen on what we call CS units, it does say v1.
regarding DJ, all I can say is that we continue to look at ways to utilize the wi fi feature. Whether it manifests itself as the DJ feature or not is anybody's guess.
Rafael Tonin - you can re-download all the pre-loaded content in the marketplace. We did that for the very reason you describe. Also, in the future, you can reverse synch any content on the device (including DRMed content) by clicking on the device and dragging it into the synch area. That allows you to store it on your PC and then you can transfer it later.
sportsunit - you raise an interesting question. What's happening with te accessories is that each big box guy has their own pet manufacturers. So, BBYs assortment is different from Circuits, which is different from Target. And, each one only carries a few. So...your best bet is to go to a couple of different stores. In case you wondered, there are about a 100 SKUs available today.

william - you need roll-up 2 to make it work. I'm not sure it is available fot 2002. I would suggest asking for an upgrade to 2003 from the manufacturer of the laptop.

its interesting that best buy would choose to carry almost no zune accessories when they carry what appears to be EVERY ipod accessory known to man. It's just annoying to go in there and experience that as a zune customer. They want to sell you the player and send you to another store to get the freaking usb cable...thats just plain silly.

On the offchance that the player supports video playlists but the software doesn't support syncing them, perhaps I can use the hard drive hack to manually put the files over there?
Another question would be whether Microsoft ever intends the zune marketplace to interop more fully with the xbox live marketplace? If I could transfer shows bought on xbox live to my zune I could probably justify them.
sportsunit - I agree. BBY can be a challenge as they have competing (and sometime conflicting) goals. That being said, they are a good partner and I think you'll see them picking up more accessories in 2007.
rmathis - you are right. The videos show up, but not the playlist. I'll ask the dev team why that decision was made.

It's awesome to see a dev so involved with the community, thanks for answering the above questions. They answered alot of my own!
My question centers around video content on the Zune. I've got alot of video content in various formats gathered from various places (all legal). When I try to bring "supported" formats into the Zune, it does indeed transcode them and load them onto the Zune, which is good.
However, when it does the transcode, the individual settings for the process aren't configurable beyond the simple slider. Is there any way to expose these settings to us without making it confusing? I'd really like to peg out the bitrate that the Zune can handle so that I can get the most out of my transcoded videos without having to use third-party applications. Being able to set the number of passes, the bitrate, and other quality-related settings is important to a small fraction of your userbase. :)
For now though, several programs do a good job transcoding material for me prior to loading it onto the Zune. Video podcasts look great but, unfortunately, it takes time to manually process each podcast I want on the Zune before it's loaded. Bleh!
I want to convert DVD to ZUNE - will have to buy a program. About 8 of them out there and no real comparison of speeds, reliablity, etc. Anywhere to get a good UNBIASED comparison?
What about Walmart Downloads?? These are mp3 I paid for, why can't I transfer them to my Zune?
The box says your computer must be running Windows XP or later - not true, My Windows XP Media Center 2004 computer can't be used, had to dig out a 6 year old lap top that we put XP on a couple years ago to be able to use the Zune software. The roll out 2 you spoke of eariler is only available for MC 2005, MC 2002, 2003, & 2004 can not be updated (my PC supplier will not provide updates even though I bought my machine after the rollout of 2005 - but that's a diff problem and lesson) so I can't use my Zune on the machine that has all my videos, mp3 stored.
Any plan to support MC 2004?
Any plan to put a video ripper in Windows Media Player to allow transfer of video to ZUNE or will we be forced to make this additional purchase to use Zune the way we want?
eric - It sounds like you're a lot like me and quality matters. I actually do all of my transcoding manually. It takes a little more effort, but I find the results are better. Dave over at Zunester has a great workflow document posted on his site. I actually use WMEncoder for most of what I do.
tigerinhogtown - I'm going to assume you mean legal DVD to zune ripping. There are several programs out there that will do it. In fact, most transcoding software will let you plug in a profile for WMV. Set it for whatever you like (I prefer 320 x 240 800 kbps simple profile cbr with 64 kbps dedicated to audio). If you are looking for a specific Zune conversion tool, M2 Solutions works pretty well for lots of different file types.

Bill, what does "Cancelling inspection of files on device..." mean when I start a manual sync? I often see this, along with a delay at "Preparing to sync" in the Zune PC software.
It seems to do some background work for a while just as I plug in the Zune. Is this the "inspection" that gets aborted if I try to add content before it finishes? What is it doing? My Zune isn't even half full.
It really does take a while before I can even browse to see what is on the Zune itself. If this is normal, it definitely needs performance improvements. These odd pauses or delays are not good for the "user experience."

I was experiencing the same problem and I found out for me it was because I was using the usb ports at the front of my computer instead of the ones located in the back, I guess for some reason the ones up front, although more convenient, are not as responsive as the ones wired into the motherboard
