I got an email a couple of days ago from our friends at SnapStream. they had just released a version of their software (BeyondTV) that works on Vista. I had been a subscriber in the past and I've recently upgraded to Vista, so I thought I'd give it a whirl.
So what does this have to do with Zune, you ask? Well, one of the great features about BTV is that they have a profile fir PMCs AND a direct sync option. So, unlike MCE, it is drop dead simple to record shows and take them with you. I thought, this might be a good opportunity to research some partnership opportunities.
For the most part, the software works as advertised. It isn't as elegant as MCE, but it is tremendously more configurable. While it takes a bit of getting used to, the options are great for setting profiles and fine-tuning your recordings.
There was just one problem. When the software re-compresses the files from MPEG to WMV, it introduced a garbled audio track. It almost drove me crazy trying to figure out what was wrong. After digging into the archives, it turns out this issue has been around for several versions. Their solution? Uninstall WMP11. Not really feasible.
Which brings me to the point of this post. I've been thinking. What if we have a "certification" for software encoders? Basically this would be a Designed for Zune program but for programs. You guys think there is any value there? If so, tell me who you think would be likely candidates to reach out to.

I'd love the ability to code for my Zune. If there was some way I could use an SDK to create something, I would be in 7th heaven. There should be a repository for plugins and add-ons on the Zune.net site (how about in that missing tab?), with the requirement that the devs would all have to pass the certification you spoke of.
I'd like to see the ability to upload custom firmware to the device, maybe in a localized, non-destructive way. I know you guys would never allow it, but it'd sure be cool. Keep us updated!
I'm not sure "encoder/program certification" would have obvious benefits to consumers right now. I'd focus on building hardware partners for "Designed for Zune" logo. Frankly nothing can have as big of an immediate impact as adding new content types to your MarketPlace. Unless you are willing to allow other stores to supply content like Vongo, MovieLink, NetFlix, etc.. Actually, NetFlix might be a great place to start. Any store that is accessible with Media Center should support Zune. Right now, I don't know of any.
Other software you might look at creating a certification program are the media creation/editing types...such as Vista's MovieMaker, CakeWalk, etc...

Sounds okay. The guys at xbstream.com I think made their xbox 360 software zune compatible or are making it compatible. certification like windows logo program might be a good idea so people know what works with zune.

I think the "Coded for Zune" certification program is a great idea . I would like to see it for all the software used for Zune players including DVD to device converters. I think it would be a wise choice for Microsoft to certify software programs for Zune and I hope you move forward with this.
