Thoughts on the 1.3 release
I spent some time this week looking at the news related to the 1.3 update. I was a bit surprised at some of the negativity in the coverage. I get that there is some frustration that we didn't get it out on the exact day we said we would. Heck, I'd be disappointed too. Maybe we shouldn't have set an expectation in the first place. But, it isn't like we're not going to ship it.
Here's what I can tell you. We are going to ship it. I have been personally testing it. I think users will be happy with the results. I'm happy with the results. I think it will be worth the extra few days of waiting to ship a solid release. So now that I've opened that Pandora's box, feel free to flame me.

I'm probably part of the silent majority that has a Zune and isn't all that concerned about the 1.3 update one way or another. Sure, I have my issues, mostly with the software, but it works for what I want and it works well. I bought it for what it could do today, not what it "might do one day".
I think people are either so into the Zune that they hang on every little thing and become hyper-sensitive or they are critics and find a way to spin anything in a negative light.
I wouldn't take it too hard, this generation of nerds want everything at the pace of Twitter, constant, instant, ever flowing information. You could probably hook up a webcam over all the Zune team's shoulders and people would still complain that they weren't getting enough information. They have somehow decided they have a right to all information, instantly.
Keep up the good work and take heart in the fact that some us realize that the Zune has only been on the market for 4 months. Seriously, I wonder what's up with these people that agonize over a few days or even weeks. Don't they have anything better to do?
I wouldn't worry about it, and please, don't let it get you bitter. The internet is a vicious place, where the worst of everyone comes out in the name of anonymity. I look forward to the release, and remember: once it's out, people will forget all about any delays. You're completely right in thinking that the extra few days to make the release solid ARE worth it, as the criticism received from a minor delay is nothing compared to glitchy software.
Keep up the great work, and I'll be looking forward to 1.3 and beyond!
Please don't underestimate the frustration of mainstream Zune owners. Alot of us chose the Zune over competitors by a slim margin based on the promise of new features that was heavily touted by the press (whether your PR teams wanted it or not).
A regular schedule of firmware releases could've gone a long way to appeasing that core audience. In addition, it could've done alot to silence detractors.
IMHO, a schedule of future releases would be awesome. Don't let your devs bite off more than they can chew. Release on a set monthly or bi-weekly schedule or something. If the code isn't very modular that could be exceedingly difficult, but it's an idea.
Bill, I think alot of the frustration comes from Zune enthusiasts who are worried that a delay in getting this 1.3 bug fix released will have a trickle down effect and impact future *new feature* releases. You've got alot of users excited about Zune's possibilities. Perhaps you can make a statement on ZuneInsider to let the community know that these bug fixes are not having a significant impact to your development timelines.
i guess i'm surprised that you're surprised. if you'd spent any time on the various zune fan sites you would have seen this coming. a lot of people are frustrated with the way it looks like the zune is being handled. granted, that means most of what they're annoyed about is the PR side, but that's what they see. i can tell you that marketing the zune under the banner of "the social" was a bad idea. there simply isn't much there in the way of social interaction. the sharing capability isn't so great, and, even if it was, the critical mass necessary for it to really matter simply isn't there yet. not only that, but that's the only aspect of "social" that exists with the zune. the 360 has a much better take on building a community than the zune does. where are the zunetag cards? where is the capability to update your live space with what you're listening to or recommend artists? basically, where is any aspect of anything social at all? it's not there, and that's what you've (not you but the zune team as a whole) focused on.
then when you look at the other big selling point, the screen, you guys haven't taken any advantage of it at all. you don't have any video content on the zune marketplace, and i think that's frustrating because the 360's content is so great. people feel like the content is there but isn't being made available. even worse, getting content you already have on the zune is a huge hassle. the codec support is terrible, and, to add insult to injury, you don't include a converter to get your content into the right format. that means you have to rely on crappy third-party converters and, most of the time, pay extra for them. if you want people to use the windows media encoder, you should tell them that, and you should make it easy to do so with a zune profile for the encoder or something along that line. you don't. of course, this wouldn't be so big of a problem if you guys provided content in the right format yourself ala the 360, but, again, you don't.
lastly, regarding video, you guys only allow the zune to output at a terrible resolution. i mean, you sell a dock and remote suggesting that you intend for people to be able to use the zune with their tv, but the picture is awful. you were complaining about the apple tv's picture? this is the same issue. if you didn't want people thinking they could use the zune in this way you shouldn't have sold the dock. people just feel like they're getting screwed. i imagine that you guys don't want to allow higher resolution because of the small memory, but, if you're going to push this "feature" you should make it usable. right now it's not.
then, and this is the worst, a lot of people can't even use their zune as it's intended because of skipping and syncing problems. the syncing problem isn't so bad, but the skipping issue is simply absurd. you guys wanted a closed system, and you got it. but the content you provide is the very content that doesn't work. that makes people feel like their getting REALLY screwed. it's your own DRM that's causing the problem, and no one wanted the DRM in the first place. i get why you need it, really. but you can't blame people for being upset that something that they would have chosen not to have but are forced to have is the very thing that causes them problems.
there is also the issue that it's taken so long for an update. i get that it's only been a little over four months, but, on a device that has a predicted average life of a year before the next model comes out, that's a third of the life span. that's huge. for good or bad, that's just how things are.

A couple of comments - Erik, totally agree with you about not biting off more than you can chew. It is interesting to note that we've done (almost) three updates in four months. I'd say that's actually pretty good in terms of regularity. Johncz - it's a good point about trickle-down. we are doing both updates and new software at the same time. That being said, the teams are balancing both to make sure one doesn't affeect the other. Phil - you raise a lot of good points. To anser your question, I wasn't surprised that people were upset, I was surprised that the reaction was that the proverbial sky must be falling. As for the social element, it's going to take time. I am in 100% agreement with you about the xBox community. I'm an avid fan myself. But, that wasn't just built in a day. When xbox live came out, it took awhile to build it up. The good news is that we are the same group and we work with those guys every day to further integrate the experiences. Justing and shawn - thanks for the nice words. It isn't often you open yourself up for flame mail and get nice responses. I guess that's one of the reasons I like this blog!
i'm sure you understood, but, looking back over my post, i realized i wasn't explicit about trying to make the link between the issues i brought up and the frustration with the update being pushed back. i wanted to make the point that people are already frustrated, and this just gave them something to latch onto. i don't think the animosity coming through the posts on zuneinsider was about the firmware update per se. rather, i think it's just the latest in what are a series of small annoyances to the zune community. granted, each of them is small, but taken together they become a bigger issue.
all that said, i really like the device. i've become quite the fanboy of the zune, and i find that funny as i've never been a fanboy of any device. i guess i really never cared for the ipod (i'm one of the people who strongly disliked the clickwheel and found the displaying of ridiculously small album art more of a tease than a genuine feature), and i'm happy to see someone who can be a real competitor put something out. more than that, i just really like the zune a lot.
i would like to list a pet peeve now: i need some sort of decent integration with my car. i know IME is supposed to be releasing a dock at some point, but it's not out yet, and i'm sick of waiting. i've had my zune a few months now, and i've been ready to have some sort of permanent fixture in my car for the zune. i figured i would let you know since you're the one who works with partners.

It skips...skips bad...skips bad all the time...
Granted, apparently it doesn't skip much unless you are relying on ZunePass...but then there's that pesky "expectation" thing again.
The most interesting aspect of all this is that it seems to reveal just how FEW ZunePass customers there are...after all, if all zune owners were zunepass subscribers, there would a great deal MORE negativity...
The only reason it's not a big deal is that most people don't know about it....

"An extra few days" means a limited number of extra days. It's going to be a week tomorrow, and if Zuneinsider's warning about no firmware/software updates tomorrow is any indication, it will be OVER a week. This is turning into a few extra weeks.

z-skip - The expectation was about a specific date, not that we wouldn't fix the issue. I agree with you it needs to be fixed and can be annoying. I personally don't have that issue, but I understand if you did if would be really frustrating.
Shawn - While I don't want to speak for him, I can tell you this is top of mind for James, the release manager. I don't think it will be weeks. But, there i go setting expectations again! :)
I don’t see why you would be surprised that people are anticipating this update so much, we all bought a product that was released with many flaws that have yet to be addressed and are hoping that this v 1.3 is the miracle cure. Personally, the major issue I face (and obviously others from reading around) is my Zune hard reboots due to static electricity, forcing me to leave my backlight on constantly, and granting me negligible battery life. But I have not read of 1.3 touching this problem. If this isn’t finally fixed I am going to presume it is a hardware defect and completely give up on this product all together. How I wish I bought an Ipod.

Unfortunately, static still seems to be a problem for my zune. With the display set to “Always On” this is not an issue. However, when the display dims, any static will cause my Zune to completely power down and remain off for quite some time. 1.3 didn’t address this – but will this problem be fixed in the future? Or is this static sensitivity something I just need to deal with using my backlight?
