Upgrade Experience
Well, it has been a couple of days so I thought I'd check in with everyone and see how the 1.3 upgrade went. So if you have upgraded (and I'll know if you've really done it), I want to hear from you. Did it work? Are you having troubles? Do you hate it? Do you love it?

The firmware upgrade is working fine - the Zune seems to pause less when I skip tons of songs at a time to try to figure out what I'm in the mood to hear.
I have noticed a little more glitchiness with the software. It seems a little more prone to crash or have sound issues. It's been hard to pin it down exactly. I'm not sure if it was the firmware or just general computer issues.
I had absolutely no problems with the upgrade. It downloaded on the first check, installed without a problem, and has been absolutely rock solid. Menu navigation is very responsive, and the minor sync problems that I had before the upgrade have completely gone away.
i had a little trouble at first when i tried to install the firmware. it got stuck and gave me an error message. i closed the software, and it wouldn't open again, so i went to the task manager and saw it was still running. i clicked "end task," shut it down, opened it back up, tried the firmware install again, and everything went fine. i wasn't able to upgrade the software until the next day, but that went through easily as well.
i too have noticed that my zune seems a little more responsive in terms of less time looking at spinning dots, but i never kept track of that, so it might not be a difference at all.
one problem i have had is the when i tried to sync a new album yesterday. the album seemed to sync fine, but when i went to look at it on the zune device (it looked fine in the software), there was a problem. the album was listed under "albums," but it said it was from an unknown artist. under the artist all the songs were there, but they weren't listed under an album. that is, they were immediately under the artist, and there was no album cover to select. i deleted the album and synced again, and got the same result. i tried three more times. finally, i used the software to find the album info. everything looked exactly the same since the ablum was ripped from a cd. however, when i synced again, everything was fine.
i never had that problem before, so it could just be a fluke.
The upgrade worked fine for me and seamless for me with the only prob of my Album Art still a little fuzzy showing. But i was hoping you guys would add UMS support, or Ogg Vorbis playback and some other killer features, is there anything like that coming down the pipe line?
The firmware upgrade was nice and smooth for me. I haven't seen a difference in my day to day use though.
There are 2 things right now that I really need to make my daily zune experience easy and smooth:
1) Podcast support - Eveyrone wants this one, we know!
2) Better manual sync - I didn't think I would miss anything from iTunes but this one has been the most frustrating. I like the system of going through and checking off all the music that I want to keep synced up. It made sure that my playcounts and ratings would always be in sync and helped with smart playlists as well. The manual sync approach really needs to be revisited.
Upgrade was smooth, didn't notice any difference as I buy all my music from eMusic so I never had skipping issues. I did like how it showed up in Microsoft Update, at least on Vista.

I know this isn't integrated podcast support but I use FeedDemon's FeedStation to download podcasts. I prefer to use an actual feed reader for feeds with enclosures (which is all a podcast is) so FeedDemon works great. It automatically downloads new podcasts and adds it to a playlist which I've setup in Zune to auto-sync.
I prefer podcasts in my feed reader because that's where I tend to find out about new podcasts, by reading someone else's blog so I can just click and subscribe right there. Of course I know a lot of people prefer to discover media feeds inside of their music app so I can see how feed support will be needed in the software.
It seems to be working fine. Before the update, I'd sync music to my Zune and it would often move become an "Unknown Album" as if the metadata was never transferred to the device. After the update, I believe it only happened once.
Also, podcast support would be a great addition to the Zune Marketplace.
Other than that, it works great. Great job Zune team!
The new update is working great. I haven't noticed any big improvement. The skipping thing was a bit of much talk about nothing. Now my Zune turns completely off after a while if not used, when I press any button it comes up with all the startup again, I found it great if it is part of the update... or would it be any malfunction? :-D anyway, I really don't mind waiting a few seconds before using it if I can save some battery.
The only thing I think I should report is that my Zune seems to take some time to find songs when using shuffled mode. I have its disk nearly full (about 3000 songs) and the gaps between tracks get quite long sometimes. Also I think video files should be played in a queue mode, I have loads of TV shows episodes in it which I would like to watch in sequence, I have always to turn something to go next video: my head or my Zune, press few buttons and turn back again...
I dont understand why people were so freaking out for this skipping issue, I mean, who downloads from Zune marketplace? Video library (just like audio) and ability to delete files on Zune, built-in ebook reader (MS eReader for PocketPC's would do great) and full wireless connectivity so I could get media stream straight from Internet. I'm still using my Pocket PC to listen internet radio on my home Wireless Network. I think this should be my Zune's job.
I've been using a different computer than my "sync" machine, as the internet doesn't work (something with netsock). I installed a second harddrive temporarily in the same computer, loaded it with XP, and installed Zune (v. 1.3), but it doesn't recognize my Zune. The hardware with the exception of the HDD hasn't changed, so I doubt that's the problem, but it's kinda upsetting... My sync machine is running 1.1, and my Zune 1.2, so I don't know why it won't work...

After installing the 1.3 firmware update my songs no longer skip at the beginning of each track, which is something I have been waiting for since release. Unfortunately 1.3 introduced a new, equally annoying bug for me:
Every morning when I unplug my Zune from my computer it thinks its still plugged in to my computer! This means that the battery indicator still shows it is charging and the backlight won't turn off. If I leave it like this the battery drains in quite a hurry. The workaround Support reccomended was rebooting my Zune every morning (the worst idea I have ever heard!). So now my songs don't skip but I have to reboot every morning.
I investigated the issue a little further and it seems to be the device isn't handling the changing power state of my computer correctly. I am running Vista and after a few hours of inactivity my computer goes into a suspend/hibernate mode. Then I resume it from that state when I need to use it. When my computer has the Zune plugged in and goes from On->Suspend->On the Zune consistently gets confused and goes into the "external power" mode even though it is running on battery power.
I beg of you, fix this soon, hotfix or whatever, I don't want to wait for 1.4 to be released and reboot my Zune every day until then.

Unfortunately, static still seems to be a problem for my zune. With the display set to “Always On” this is not an issue. However, when the display dims, any static will cause my Zune to completely power down and remain off for quite some time. 1.3 didn’t address this – but will this problem be fixed in the future? Or is this static sensitivity something I just need to deal with using my backlight?

The firmware has been working fine and so far the new software has, and it was in a nick of time to. Two days before the release of the firmware the software didn't want to recognize my Zune, and then it gave me an error (340) when signing into Zune that first line couldn't handle and second line still hasn't got back to me on. But I un-installed and re-installed 3 times, got the new firmware, and I am running again.
Mine is dead thanks to 1.3. The update failed and took the existing firmware with it. My device is presently a paper wieght and I am NOT happy. Tech support was a waste...they have asked that I return the device. I cannot find anyone out there who knows how to resolve this. I can't be the only one.
I use the zune pass, and the skipping was enough I thought there was a problem with my zune's hardware! But after the 1.3 it works great.
One issue I had with the 1.3 was that all of my music on the zune lost their digital rights and wouldn't play. I tried several methods and ultimately just wiped and resynced the device. A bit frustrating that I had to go to that measure, but eh, the fix to the skipping was worth it. :)

I liked the upgrade, when my Zune was working. I think the battery might have drained less, too.
Unfortunately, Miscrsoft will not service under the warranty, so unless the person who gave it to me for Christmas comes up with a receipt I will not be able to upgrade (or use) my Zune further.
My upgrade went without a hitch! My Zune has been flawless since I bought it, so the 1.3 firmware wasn't a big deal to me. However, it is nice to know that you guys are constantly making progress! Thanks so much for the upgrade!
well since everyone else's zune sounds like it is working fine maybe someone can help me. i just got a zune and when i opened it up i installed the software off the cd. well it all seemed to be going fine. my zune updated it let me name it and set up my zune tag and everything. everything looked just fine. then i closed the software and reopened it. it wouldnt find my zune. so i unplugged the sune rebooted the software then plugged it bak in. still nothing. ok so i restarted my computer. this time only my zunes name showed up. it wouldnt let me sync anything to it or check the stats. so then i thought maybe they had a software update. which ofcourse they did. so i uninstalled mine and downloaded that. same problem still. then i reset and whiped the zune manually. it reinstalled firmwire update 1.4 and worked fine. then i restarted the zune software. same problem all over again. can someone plz help.
Zune is a piece of $#@!$, I have had it for a month and nothing but problems. Its never synced properly and crashes when there is over 6 gigs stored on it. I am a big microsoft software fan and worked with them for years, being a microsoft engineer. But this thing is junk, never have I had so much frustration and I dont recommend it to anyone that wants to stay sane. Tried everything, firmware, software, cables, drivers, computers, still a piece of shit in a white candy shell.
the zune update worked, but i dont know how to use it! i cant upload music, even when i drag it to the little icon in the corner. it frustrates me.
