IAA Show
Last week I was in Frankfurt for the IAA show. I was really impressed. Imagine a show the size of CES filled with nothing but cars and car accessories. Now imagine it is six times the size of CES. It was amazing. I read in the newspaper that there were over a million visitors to the show. WOW!
I was there to meet with a few of our partners and to collect some information on trends in the automotive industry. One thing that was clear is that the number of gadgets in the car are proliferating. The other thing is that there is no standard way (elegant or not) to connect them all in the car. There was everything from simple cables to black boxes to aftermarket headunits to OEM systems to nav systems with built in wireless. I'm not sure there was one single trend that emerged as a clear winner, but it sure was great to see more options starting to emerge other than the FM transmitter. I'd say 80% of the cars there had some sort of connection built in. most of them were standard aux-in cables, but that is still better than the world we live in now. Some of the cool interoperability with in-dash electronics was impressive. One of the cooler implementations was Blue and Me from Fiat (yes, Fiat). It was a simple integrated entertainment system, but was easy to use via a display embedded in the speedometer and connected to external devices such as a nav unit. It was very slick - especially for an entry-level car. The next year or so should prove very interesting if the manufacturers standardize on an implementation.

Hey Bill, I know this is going to sound weird but I want to get a Zune soon because I'm deploying to Iraq the first week of Nov... and well, I don't want to go out and buy a brand new Zune if V2 is coming out before I deploy... can you give some help to a soldier in need? In my opinion the dawn of the 'smart car' is going to be as problematic as the 'smart home', in which there still isn't a concise direction (leader) either..... You may recall I've bent your ear more than once on connecting people in broader ways :-)
With companies scrambling to make dollars 'today', the product emphasis seems to be on what can be made, as opposed to what should be made... what I mean here is that like all things which relate widely, the issues seem complex because they effect many things...where a different eye may see the issues being fewer and more fundamental, and by their nature effect many things.
I can't help feeling that the speed by which we might end up with a clear Digital Connected direction is in some part related to whether our products serve the many Market channels at any time, ...or serve the User in some more fundamental way.

Bill, just curious why you choose to go with a 1.8" screen instead of 2"...which by looking at the flash model seems like it could accommodate it. Was it a power issue?

Philip - All interesting points. The biggest limiting factor in the car deployment is the manufacturers themselves. Most plan 2-3 years ahead. So, what you see today in cars (mostly analog + serial controls) is very old technology. I think the next wave will be far more interesting.
Johncz - Ironic as it sounds (me working on the hardware side) the LCD was procured by a different team and I wasn't privy to any of the discussion. I wish I could shed a little more light, but alas, no.
Thanks Bill, now that you got much of the hardware developed and software rewritten I imagine that next is abit of a refinement story. And hopefully that means there will be abit more regularity in getting updates like XBox's spring/fall update. Thanks!! I wish someone from Zune would communicate that loud and clear.
johncz - we've still got lots of hardware work going on for the next versions. Of course we'll also be working on software improvements as well. Work is already starting. :)
