Reactions to the Zune v2 Announcements
If you've read my blog for any length of time, you'll know I've worked in this space for a long time. So, when it comes to evaluating how a particular announcement is seen in the market, I generally take a wait and see approach. I have this theory that for the first couple of days, you can influence the message by picking and choosing who you talk to. After that, though, the message becomes organic. When bloggers and users digest the message, they form opinions and start to voice them in their various outlets. At that point, is when you should really start to look at things with a critical eye.
So, now that we are a couple of days out, I've started to read the feedback and I have to say that I am pleased by what I'm reading. Sure, there are lots of comparisons to the iPod and lots of stories that say that Apple have sold a hundred million units and we only sold just over a million. But, if you read further, there are a lot of really great stories being written. First, we're getting a lot of kudos for upgrading v1 to v2 software. I am pretty proud of that feature and it wasn't a trivial effort. Next, we're getting credit for the MP3 store. Considering I used to work in the PFS/DRM side of Microsoft, I can say that's a big step for us. There is cautious optimism surrounding wireless sync (which is actually really cool in practice). Also, people who use the Zune Pad seem to really like it. Lastly, we're getting praise for the physical hardware.
What has been really interesting to me is reading the comments on most of the stories. Last year, my perception was that the vast majority of folks posted fairly negative feedback. Sure, lots of them were fanboys. There is no doubt of that. But, even some fans seemed to have their criticisms (software updates as an example). While it is certainly too early to proclaim success or failure, there seems to be a good number of people who are excited about the products. I read one article written about whether Zune will be the top of anyone's Christmas list (written in a sort of snarky way), and several of the posters actually said it was.
So, what's my point? First, I am happy with the first impressions we're seeing. Second, it feels like we've gotten over the hump of criticism. Don't get me wrong, I've been at Microsoft a long time and we're often a target for criticism and I expect nothing less. But, it seems like we've paid our dues and are starting to get a fair shake. Lastly, I'm excited for people to try the devices. They say the proof is in the pudding. I don't think you can judge the product without trying it - both stand alone and as the end to end. I think we're going to really surprise a few folks out there this year.

I cannot wait to try it out!! I am really happy with the product anouncement. I have a question though. You guys have written the code ground up this time. Since now all the code is yours it should be easier for you guys to bring in new features and updates. I was wondering if the updates is going to happen twice an year or just once as it happened this year. Personally I feel the major features will happen before each new Zunes but you guys can surely bring about incremental updates more often. Also what people are forgetting is the ZuneSocial. Do you have your take on that. I think that can be very interesting.
Oh I almost forgot. What about third party product. I am waiting for the alarm clock!!
i tend to be seeing the same the same thing about the response to the zune. even on fanboy dominated engadget/gizmodo, there are fewer and fewer 'whats a zune?!' comments, and more and more 'im definately buying that'.
i can't help but wonder, is this why you guys dropped the brown? i know it was the poorest seller of the colors, but it was something that differentiated the zune and gave it a lot more class in my opinion. but of all the negative comments i've seen about the zune30, the majority of them seem to be immature 'brown' oriented comments. have you dropped the brown to remove the zune 'shat brick' association?
rohit - I don't think the update schedule has been set yet. I know we've already started working on it, but I really couldn't say when and how many.
Zune social is going to surprise some folks as well. Just like the social networking sites themselves, it has an organic growth plan. It will morph over time. I can't wait to see it in a year or two.
I approved an alarm clock a few months back, but I don't know when the product will ship. sorry, I can't tell you who it was from.
Jake - I think the decision wasn't as much to drop brown as it was to add green. Seeing as the brown was really brown/green, I don't think that's a huge change. We still retain brown as the base for all packaging.
I think Zune is primed to surprise folks like you said. However you guys need to keep your eyes on the prize by...
- Delivering a substantive Spring Update. That was sorely missing last year.
- Full year, multi-dimensional marketing unlike last years spurts. iTunes gets mentioned on CNN and American Idol. Zune should have similiar relationships with popular media outlets.
- Making Zune Pass more than just all you can eat music. I think there needs to be a *must have* capability for people who might not otherwise be interested in monthly subscription.
- Develop new Wifi experiences...2008 should be all about software enhancements and enabling Wifi
- Start work making a Zune application for Windows Mobile phones.
- Tie in and take advantage of more Microsoft assets like Live SkyDrive and Windows Home Server.
You still have your work cut out for you but I think its manageable.
Oh one more thing, next year please put a 2" screen in the flash model. thanks

I plan on going from a 60gb ipod to the 80gb zune upon release. The thing i'm very interested in seeing is some footage of the new zune software. I know you guys can put together some good looking stuff judging from windows media center..

Will the new Zune 80 Leather Case be coming out by November 13? Just wondering because it's not even featured on Zune.net yet.
I was intrigued particularly when the sync to Media Center for video etc. was brought up. Almost purchased v1 Zune on line anticipating SW upgrade. Then I heard it was not compatible with MC2005. Intrest decreasing.....
Are Microsoft ever going to release Zune outside America, the rest of the world always seems to get forgotten ?

david - there are plans for expanding, but I am not part of those discussions so I don't have any insight for you.
Is there going to be any sort of big accessory announcement or will news just trickle in from different sources around the web.
I agree with the first poster that a more incremental update schedule a la 360 would help with the loyal fanbase. We know that it tends to look good when you drop many features at once during theh holidays. But, 2 or 3 smaller updates per year would be excellent.
The devices look good, but honestly, I'm looking forward to Zune Social more than I am the new devices. And, I don't think that's a bad thing. It says nothing about the devices (which look good) and everything about the direction you guys are taking things.

At first I was skeptical of the Zune. I had to ask how a company could enter a market with one dominant product and several smaller companies that were only fighting for share from their smaller counterparts. Then I realized that this is all from Microsoft and I had to silence that. :)
Then my brother got a v1 and I got to play with it a little. It was an enjoyable experience, considering that my first MP3 player was a SONY Network Walkman. It was only a 1Gb model (but it was a flash drive), had a beautiful three-line organic display, and held mor songs then an iPod.
Then I moved to college and moved(*coughs*downgraded) to a 4Gb iPod nano that only help a measly 305 more songs then my Network Walkman (at ideal capacity holding 695 songs, and I did get it to hold that). So I had even more of a reason to hold off on buying a Zune because I just had a new MP3 player (and I got free 2 day shipping direct from china on it due to a fluke with apple/fedex). Then around february I grew tired of the iPod. It just wasn't all that special.
This is when I drove an hour and a half to buy my Zune. I also picked up the premium headphones (a simple miracle as they are amazingly comfortable, and the magnet on the outside is an amazing innovation for storage) and a ZunePass (three months at a time). I was (and still am) so thrilled with the overall Zune experience and with the incorporation between the software and hardware that I even found myself using my Rhapsody (that I had paid for a subscription for a full year for that only expired last week) less. I moved so much to the Zune software that it became my main music center.
With the v2 firmware upgrade I was thankful because it made it easier to do all the things I love to do with my Zune easier. And it took a lot of the time I had spent between wired interaction with my Zune(s) and took it wireless to fit my busy life.
I now more then ever bow at the altar of Bill Gates (to borrow from my mother). I feel that Microsoft is no longer a company trying to catch up in a fast-changing world, but a company that has taken on the challenge issued by Apple and (sorry) dropped a brick on it.
